A ribbon for a bodice of an early 20th century outfit from Torysky, Slovakia I own was a bit too short and frayed so I experimented with weaving a replacement. The technique used to make it is fingerweaving. Weaving alternate up and down starting with the right strand until the middle and then drop the strand, then weave alternate up and down from the left and drop/leave the strand there and repeat.

Left is original and right is my reproduction:

I used a silk/wool combo, but next time I think I’d go with 100% cotton or 100% silk. It’s felting a bit already.

Torysky ribbons have quite a few variations to study. Some are crocheted rather than woven. I’ve also seen a few women creating the fingerweaving style I attempted as bobbin lace, on a pillow with pins.

Above ribbon is similar to the one I re-created, but with only one zig-zag throughout instead of two. A chair used for tension. The woman weaving it was hypnotizing- swift and meditative. Photo courtesy of Lenka Zidova (@lenkazidova).
In the above photo of FS Javorina z Torysok you can see them all wearing a crocheted ribbon.

The woven fingerweaving style is also often used in the headdress:

A still showing headdress ribbons using the same weaving technique from this lovely video.
